First Class Smoke Room on board Olympic. (Author’s collection)

The Smoke Room was fitted with finely carved mahogany panelling, supporting pillars and floral and scroll ornamentations with egg-and-tongue mouldings. The room’s design was an adaptation of early Georgian style and was based on the style prevalent in old English houses of that period. On Titanic, though, the characteristic carving in the Georgian style had been largely replaced throughout by inlaid mother-of-pearl in elegant scroll and floral designs.

The coal-burning fireplace was fitted against the after bulkhead on the centre line. The mantle was of sculpted, veined marble with floral cornucopia, shell ornamentations and egg-and-tongue borders. On top of the mantle was a clock and mounted above was a painting by Norman Wilkinson entitled ‘Plymouth Harbour’.

A bar with a small adjoining pantry was located aft of the Smoke Room and was shared with the Veranda and Palm Courts. This facility is where refreshments were prepared and where drinks were dispensed to the stewards. The bar and pantry facility contained cold lockers, a sink and other amenities. It was also fitted with a two-drawer Milner safe. Choice brands of cigars, cigarettes and tobacco could be purchased, hence the need for the safe as money was transferred.

The First Class Smoke Room opened at 8.00 a.m. and the lights were extinguished at midnight. Passengers were requested not to engage in ‘high play’ or use objectionable language and were also cautioned to be vigilant against the predations of the professional gamblers who frequented the transatlantic liners.
